The original brief: to conduct a series of low cost guerrilla-type events in obscure venues with bands chosen from amongst SUPERSWEET’s friends and favourite people. After we had already gotten ourselves understandably more-than-a-little bit carried away in December with the superspecial SUPERSWEET launch party hosted by Liars, this time it was about keeping things simple right? All well and good, except somewhere along the way the concept of a “concept night” grabbed hold… and just had to be answered.
You see, SUPERSWEET has never really been about taking the straightforward option. Will we ever? Not when the chance to throw real artistic complexity into the mix arises; not when the hard-working and endlessly creative people we enrol refrain from cautioning us to be sensible; not when one of our favourite venues is available; and certainly not when we have a brand new projector…
In fact there was a certain inevitability that artistic passions would run wild as soon as our friends Good Shoes got involved in SUPERSWEET’s first such outing. The band’s front man Rhys – someone whose opinion (and cooking) we admire greatly – has long been a big fan of Rob Ryan, an artist responsible for unique and thought-provoking works. Inspired by Ryan’s flights of heart-warming genius, thus began a furore of paper-cutting in relief, assemblage of hanging things and mirrored cityscape-building that resulted in the creations seen below.
The scale of this tribute and work of love demanded a worthy venue and the bands to do it justice. We would be hard-pressed to find better ambassadors of the SUPERSWEET concept night spirit than Good Shoes, of course, but the evening schedule’s first blessing came from a very important new band who we’ve predicted will make massive waves across either side of the Atlantic – and Pacific for that matter....
