If Kid British were compared to something edible it’d have to be Liquorice Allsorts - they're upbeat, eclectic and colourful and without a doubt, "Made in Britain". But have no fear, their sound isn't too sweet. These lads have been around the block and like to dabble with a bit of this 'n that from ska and indie to pop and reggae. At present, they're gigging and raucously serving up a storm with a sound that refuses to be pigeonholed. SUPERSWEET went to see how eclectic James Mayer, lead singer of the Manchurian band could be on his take of his favourite videos. Their new EP 'Leave London' is out now on fluorescent 10" vinyl so check out the video above first!
Red Hot Chilli Peppers: Californication
James: The first one I was thinking of was 'Californication' by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, because it's made up of loads of video games mixed together. It takes you through a journey. I like that they're all playing themselves in these different characters in the video. I just remember being young and watching that video and thinking, "That's wicked!" You know when you're really into computer games when you're a kid…
Michael Jackson: Remember the Time
James: Second one has to be Michael Jackson, 'Remember the Time'. Again that's a wicked video because it tells a story and narrates the lyrics.
The Streets: Fit But You Know It
James: Third one is The Streets' 'You're Fit But You Know It'. It's just the little things in it. We love that video as a band. When they're looking in the photo of the holiday, there are people moving within the photo. Adding little detail like that is what makes the video so good.
Rude Tube Sparky Special
James: Another video? Do you watch Rude Tube on Channel Four? They played this clip of four or five lions attacking a buffalo and they've got it in the water. The buffalo is having a bad day as it is, when a crocodile comes and grabs its back legs. And then there are these adult buffalos that come and gang up on the lions. It's like a ten-minute clip.
I was on you tube doing nothing this one time…and I've got to tell you this one. A guy can make a farting noise with his hands but he can play any song with his hands-any melody or chord. He said he's got air pockets in his hands and each note he just plays from different places on his hands. Being a musician I thought that was extremely talented to be honest! (laughs) I mean how do you know where the notes are? I don't know where you would start…how do you put that together? It's a bit random.
Kid British: Elizabeth (Unofficial Video)
James: Our own favourite video that we've made is probably the Elizabeth one. I remember going to a gig and Elizabeth came on radio one whilst we were filming, which was a really big coincidence. We ended up getting a really good video out of it just miming along and having a laugh at the back of the van. We've had nearly 12,000 hits on Youtube so stuff like that is really spur of the moment. So I think that's why I love that one because it's a bit more natural.
