To pigeonhole the musical trio from Leeds as ‘fizzy indie pop-punk’ is a major disservice. Instead the sound is a mishmash of cymbals, timeless lyrics and catchy guitar riffs. Think skylarks in flight whilst concurrently frolicking and joyously flapping their wings and you’ll get the drift. Check out this early video of the catchy ‘Molten’ above if you need an idea. Recording their album The Golden Spike outside the UK in America gives them a more expansive outlook. So thankfully no cliché indie twee as front girl Katie Harkin shares her love for Kelis, M88, some teen angst and her discovery of MTV.
Kelis: Young, Fresh N' New
Katie: The slushie machines, the hair, the MONSTER TRUCK!
Kate Bush: Cloudbusting
Katie: Wilhelm Reich invented the cloudbusting machine and in this video Kate Bush plays his son, I love how she's standing downhill from him to make her look smaller!
Napoleon IIIrd: Hit Schmooze For Me
Katie: A local hero of ours, it is fun to see James run around and the 'heads-up' at the end gives me a little heart-swell every time.
M83: Don't Save Us From The Flames
Katie: So sweet! So teen angst! Such a perfect ending to fit those limitless synths!
Tonight Tonight: Smashing Pumpkins
Katie: I saw this at my grandparents house in Cyprus when I was a kid - they had satellite tv so they could watch English soaps but it was my first exposure to MTV. A really pretty video based on Georges Méliès's 1902 silent film A Trip to the Moon.
Jason Collett: Fire
Katie: Shhhimmmmmerrrrssss just like the song. Its Marmalade sun can help me through all the snow in Leeds at the moment.
