Last year for the first time we held New Band Competition on MySpace. A success it was, but little did we know about what success it would be for the ones we voted for... or not. A year later, SUPERSWEET writers have turned into SUPERSWEET investigators and try to find out what these 10 winners are up to right now... again, or not. It's a gamble but we loved their work any way. Check out who's doing what right now, and those who have never seen the feature of 2007 can check it out right here.
10 - Hannes |
Myspace
Set as a side project from his main endeavours in Pitchtuner (an orchestrated German/Japanese electro-guitar clash trio bases in Berlin), Hannes used his programming proficiency to humble acclaim in 2007.
Currently working on his debut solo album Songs To Fall Asleep With, Hannes’ amalgamation of brooding synths and jogging acoustic guitar sound equates to the inception of swirling lo-fi electronica.
Hannes travelled with his solo avant-garde project throughout 2007 across Germany; however, much time was dedicated to Pitchtuner with the development and self-promotion of their recently released third album ‘Riding The Fire’.
2008 still remains auspicious for Hannes and Pitchtuner: the anticipation of new releases and further gigging after airplay across national and independent radio stations within Germany has left him with a taste for success. - Thomas Ward
9 - Holy Hail |
Myspace
After a sudden serge in popularity for bands that consist of a synthesizer over guitarists, Holy Hail look set to be another act along with Does it offend You Yeah? and Crystal Castles to take advantage of the resurgence in the rise in interest of modern day electro music.
Having toured with Bonde De Role throughout the back end of last year and playing one off gigs with the likes of CSS and Mystery Jets it can only be a short time until this band begin to infringe upon our airways. The band was also on the Crystal Castles bill for the cultural tour de force that was Liverpool music week. Unfortunately for us suffering the balmy weather of Blighty in the spring the bands next live dates are always across the pond in their home town of New York.
With a low key single release on the small but trendy Adventures Close to Home recordings following the numerous gigs around the country the band then gained more attention via an article in the Guardian which can only help in enhancing the size of a bands audience. With their camp rap styling they are sure to make the leap along with previous tour buddies to the dizzying heights that were reached by CSS over the last year. - Chris Ebbs, Photo By Chris Ebbs
8 - Dark Captain Light Captain |
Myspace
Having encapsulated MySpace with their melancholic folk the Dark Captain Light Captain have gone on to sign with independent record label loaf recordings and are in the process of making their first album whilst at the same time extending their line up with some extra vocals and goose bump worthy brass inclusions. But with any luck the recordings won’t lose the charm and sincerity of which the MySpace demos provided.
They begin to tour their debut long player with a gig at the Inidig02 venue with fellow deliverers of haunting musical landscapes 65 Days Of Static which is likely to create an atmosphere like very few musical events could only wish to achieve. The band will then host their fans in the more intimate and fitting surroundings that is Shoreditch church.
In an increasing world of electro beats and synthesizers Dark Captain Light Captain offer a depth and substance beyond the label of their clothes or brightness of their jeans and trainers. With any hope they will make a significance impact with their debut and with their live gigs increase and sustain the fan base they have already created through the continuous talent finding tool that is MySpace. - Chris Ebbs
7 - The Boogie Woogie Snapshots |
Myspace
International glitch-hoppers, The Boogie Woogie Snapshots, had never met outside of cyberspace. With one member, K. Shalatta, in Kyoto, Japan, another, Brendan, in Mallow, Ireland and the third, Glitchpitter, in Hemel Hempstead, they made music using the internet alone.
And such hypnotic music they made. Our judges all found their entry, ‘Cytokine Storm’, with its strange meanderings and darkened layers, to be sexy enough to vote it to number seven.
One year later, things have definitely changed for the band. Glitchpitter explains; “the band are occasionally recording, but it has become incredibly hard to get in contact with K. recently. He’s studying some unfeasible degree thing in Japan somewhere. Me and Brendan, a.k.a. Fumblefingers, have met up quite a bit recently, and he’s been DJing out quite a lot too.”
“I've mainly gone on to form a live band, Arabada, which is doing quite well, I played at the ‘Lake of Stars’ festival in Malawi last October and have been invited to play at some other international festivals this year.”
So seemingly on hold indefinitely, the band members seem to be following separate paths. Despite this, they may well prove to be amongst the first in a cyber-movement, one which stretches credulity at its current state of non-existence, where music is made by bands who have never met. Truly international, transcending language and cultural divisions, The Boogie Woogie Snapshots are poster boys for the entire concept of the global village. - Steve Gislam
6 - DeadDogInBlackBag |
Myspace
DeadDogInBlackBag slot effortlessly into that tight niche space that is currently populated by Chicks on Speed and Robots in Disguise and would be a very welcome addition as they possess the ability to surpass both of these acts.
What they also have in common along with the latter of these two bands is being able to count the Mighty Boosh boys as acquaintances even roping in the services of the increasingly eccentric Bob Fossil (Rich Fulcher) on track Uncle Kevin. On the surface this may seem some kind of superficial but surely it can only work in their favour with the success they are currently riding on and their ability to turn whatever they touch into gold.
Mix the electro beats with the girls sickening good looks and asymmetric haircuts it seems there are few factors that this band aren’t appealing in. The only worry is the ability of other bands of similar ilk to not make any impact whatsoever on the music industry or for that matter an audience.
But with the songs these girls possess and the ever growing fascination with anything without an actual band continuing it appears 2008 should be good to them and put even more musicians in the job centre. - Chris Ebbs, Photo By Vince Starr
5 - LOVE2B |
Myspace
Love2B are currently on sabbatical, having moved to different countries! They promise to get back in action soon… plans are in place to start work on demos for the next album, hopefully within the next month. They have also launched a perfume, apparently. - Ruari Barratt
4 - Silicon Vultures |
Myspace
At number four were Kettering based electro-punk art-thugs, Silicon Vultures. Sounding like someone rubbing sandpaper against your eardrums (in a good way, if that’s possible), they gained a small notoriety in their own right mostly due to their ferocious approach to making music. One year on, we can still hear Jae Delaney’s guttural screaming somewhere inside our skulls.
However, being a difficult band to track down, SUPERSWEET has little more to go on as to their current activities than hearsay, conjecture and innuendo, which, frankly, is good enough for us…
Their MySpace page is sparse, despite their relatively large number of friends, and there have been rumours that the band has split up, though we can’t totally confirm this.
We also heard, from a source whose identity we cannot reveal due to its high secrecy, that Jordan had gone on to form a band with Bryan Molko. Although there’s been little extra-Placebo action from Bryan in the past, it’s not too big a stretch of the imagination to picture the two working together on something dark, electronic and a little bit Goth. Until then, there are but two songs on their MySpace page, neither of which are downloadable, to remind us of the sweet horror that is/was the Silicon Vultures. - Steve Gislam
3 - Rubicks |
Myspace
Gary Numan. He’s more than just a anachronistic meta-joke for the Mighty Boosh to riff off from time to time. He’s not even just a walking library of samples for Richard X or whatever other electro-pop producer du jour fancies ripping off ‘Are Friends Electric?’ for the zillionth time. He’s a genuine electro-institution, and also just happens to be the guy whom Rubicks are supporting on a UK tour in March.
Numan isn’t the only pioneer they’ve toured with – in the past year they’ve played a brace of shows with ex-Ultravox vocalist John Foxx, not to mention making the trip over to Austin, Texas, for SxSW. Clearly in the year since SUPERSWEET clocked them at no.3 in the 2007 MySpace Bands We Love list, the band haven’t been sitting around twiddling their thumbs.
In addition to this, the band have recruited a new drummer in the form of Anthony Johns, and have been toiling away with producer Robert Harder, with a follow-up to 2006’s In Miniature. Currently with the working title Idiot Time, it sounds more alien, a greater arm’s length than their earlier material. Since this is all about bands on MySpace, consider that your cue to go check out ‘June Waits’, a track that sounds like a lonely robot stuck in a low orbit around Earth with nothing but some Blondie B-sides for company.
There are so many female fronted electro acts clogging up the internet these days, you’d be forgiven for wanting to slap seven shades of Moog out of every pouting one of them. But there’s none of the tawdry, low-rent sexual bravado of the Goldfrapp-clones in Rubicks. There’s a subtle fierceness in frontwoman Vanessa Redd’s vocals, coupled with the kind of layered melodies that reveal something different each time you listen. - Hugh Platt, Photo By Kelly Watkins
2 - The Aliens |
Myspace
2007 was pretty good for the Aliens, what with writing arguably one of the best albums of the year – Astronomy for Dogs – and headlining the new Park stage at Glastonbury. Of course they never quite managed to match the early high of coming a close second in the SUPERSWEET new bands comp, but credit to the lads for persevering like. And saving the Starship Enterprise from disaster along the way – trust us, we saw the film footage.
Actually everything was looking up for 2008 as well, with more extensive touring planned and a second album scheduled to arrive any time after January. But then the cosmically-talented trio-in-the-key-of-Fife was hit by news that two of its members (John McLean and Robin Jones) are facing an outrageous tax bill from their Beta Band days, which has mysteriously appeared only now.
Black Affair’s Steve Mason and Richard Greentree of the General and Duchess Collins are similarly affected by this massive burden and the current projects of all the artists are cruelly under threat. We strongly advise anyone with a heart, a love of music, a hope in humanity, or just a bit of spare cash to go to each of these bands’ websites/MySpace pages and find out what can be done. Your return in music will be more than fair reward if 2008 lives up to expectations. - Alderson
1 - The Teenagers |
Myspace
Not to be confused with the 1950s doo-wop quintet (were you confused?) – who incidentally are still going strong (well, still going) – these three non-teens with almost as many ideas actually managed to save French indie (apparently… again…) by wearing Morrissey glasses and singing about fucking American cunt. A year on from winning the coveted SUPERSWEET New Bands competition (with same tactic), the Teenagers really are going strong and totally playing gigs nearly every night and acting cool. They’ve just been in Mexico at the MX Beat Festival on a line-up that included Beastie Boys, MIA, The Cribs and Lo Fi FNK.
Sound-wise they’ve become a little more serious over the year (for something that is said to have started as a fake MySpace band with comment-inspired lyrics). This is a bit evident from single “No Love”, which comes out this Monday (10 March) and shows the Smiths influence is on a roll. Debut album Reality Check is then due to launch 17 March. Will it live up to its name? We ask. Fact is the band currently lives out of passports and if your town contains their eight professed influences (“sex, love, party vodka, summer, puberty, Red Bull, ham rollz”) you’ll probably see them soon! - Alderson, Photo By Meg Bourne
